Summary of my PhD

I have been asked to summarise what I will be doing in Germany. Most people I have talked to have a general idea, so I will just explain it as simply as I can.

I am doing my PhD in Computer Vision.
Computer Vision is a field of Computer Science that is analysing graphical images and getting computers to see the world as humans do. The application of this is used for many things, such as automated driving and robotics.

Specifically, my research project is studying Binocular Stereo Vision with the purpose of achieving real time obstacle recognition. The application which I will be applying this to is in cars so they can detect when obstacles are in the path.

I will be in Germany for 6 months in an Internship with DaimlerChrysler. I will be using their proprietory software and equipment to start my reserach. I will be working with some of the top people in the industry regarding stereo vision. Very exciting stuff, a great opportunity :)

When I get back to NZ, I will be using the same software and equipment to continue my project. This will be my life for the next 3-4 years.

Hopefully that explains a bit to the people who didn't know what I was doing.
